Windows Server based VPN/RRAS not being passed domain creds for file sharing – Windows 10 Support – BleepingComputer

Hi,

I’m the sysadmin for a school and since the January 2022 VPN update+fix updates, all users running up-to-date versions of Windows 10 (not been able to test on 11) are able to connect to the VPN/RRAS server but are unable to access network resources. UseRasCredentials is still on so this isn’t the issue.

I have recreated the connection and also the server config. I have even created a new server using a fresh install of Server 2022 to see if that works, (the main server runs 2019) I have used a machine that hasn’t been updated recently this evening and have been able to map the drives without issue, then applied the updates and then lost the ability to do this.

From what I can gather, usually the credentials get entered into the credential manager so that those credentials are used for file sharing and SQL requests but without this, the local user is being used which obviously doesn’t have any permissions on the network, so you receive a password incorrect message.

I cant find much about this online at all other that one person on The Microsoft Tech Community forum (https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-servicing/january-2022-quality-update-breaks-passing-domain-credentials/m-p/3072773). They have suggested a workaround but this wont work for my users as their passwords update regularly and also need me to do everything for them, plus its exactly that, a workaround.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening or what I might do to track down the cause?

Thanks,

Paul
