UC San Diego researchers creating air purifiers that filter 90% of COVID-19 carrying particles – Becker’s Hospital Review

Researchers at the University of California at San Diego are creating 250 air purifiers for locations around campus that filter at least 90 percent of the particles carrying the COVID-19 virus, according to an Oct. 7 report from CBS.

“The virus, if it’s there, will get trapped in the filter material,” Kim Prather, PhD, professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, told CBS.

The devices, called Corsi-Rosenthal boxes, are made up of four air filters on the sides. An electric fan on top draws out the purified air as it flows through.

The university’s student body president told CBS it takes just 15 minutes to make one of the devices.
