High expectations for Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra, will have to be tempered a little in the light of new information from a reputable source.
Many had been hoping for a radical 200-megapixel camera in the next-gen flagship but, according to perennial leaker Ice Universe, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will instead feature a camera spec much closer to the current Galaxy S21 Ultra.
According to the leaker, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature an “improved” version of the 108-megapixel Isocell HM3 sensor found in the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Other than that, the rear camera specifications are expected to remain much the same, including a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera and dual 10-megapixel telephoto cameras at 3x and 10x zoom.
Aside from these unspecified improvements in the main sensor, the main improvements in the new flagship appear to be in the telephoto cameras which are set to benefit from new Sony 1/3.52” sensors. According to the tweet, the new sensors have slightly smaller pixels than the previous versions at 1.12μm Vs 1.22μm.
Smaller pixels usually result in reduced image quality, so it remains to be seen what real-world difference this change might make.
Also specified is a one-degree increase in field of view on both the 3x and 10x zoom lenses. This discrepancy could be due to rounding inaccuracies, but note that the field of view of the main lens supposedly changes in the other direction, from 83 degrees on the S21 Ultra to 85 degrees on the S22 Ultra: It’s not likely to make a significant difference either way.
Of course, there’s much more to a camera than lens and sensor specs and It would be wrong to assume that the S22 Ultra won’t perform significantly better than its predecessor despite its hardware similarities. However, Samsung needs to make some big improvements if it is to achieve better camera scores in tests such as Dxomark. It remains to be seen whether this new tweaked camera setup will be up to that task.
