Earlier this month a cyberattack against Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) prompted the state’s largest district to cancel all classes districtwide for days.
This affected 144 schools, which serve about a fourth of New Mexico’s public-school students.
The computer systems of Bernalillo County, home to Albuquerque, also were hacked about a week earlier, keeping most administrative buildings closed to the public.
Bernalillo County residents couldn’t file mortgages because of the attack, the New Mexico Association of Realtors said.
It did not appear the APS and Bernalillo County cyber incidents were related, authorities said at the time. It was unclear who was responsible for the separate hacking incidents.

On Thursday, Feb. 17, the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce will feature local cybersecurity firm Attack Research, to present information about how to safeguard your system.
David Sayre and Zac Hogan of Attack Research will discuss the latest attacks and mitigation techniques used today.
Sayre is a Santa Fe native with advanced degrees in Computer Science from New Mexico State University. He is the CTO and one of the founding partners of Attack Research. Before Attack Research, Sayre worked with LANL on several different cyber security teams. He has given multiple presentations and training at security conferences around the world, focusing on covert command and control, computer exploitation, and lateral movement. Sayre has continued to push, discover and create reliable and safe hacking techniques that avoid traditional detection in private industry on a range of systems, from traditional networks to avionic components.
Hogan grew up in Santa Fe with a lifelong interest in computers, but only recently took the dive into building this interest into a career. He has been employed by Attack
Research since 2018 and holds an AAS for Information Technologies and a certificate in Network Security from Santa Fe Community College. Hogan has a wealth of knowledge in the latest cybersecurity and mitigation techniques used by today’s threat actors.
